The Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced on May 28 that Aizhai-Shibadong-Dehang Canyon Scenic Area in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hunan Province, was added to the 5A category, the highest rating for Chinese scenic spots. The public notification period is from May 28 to June 4, 2021.

Aizhai-Shibadong-Dehang Canyon Scenic Area is located in the deep core area of Xiangxi Geopark. It consists of Aizhai Bridge, which is known as “Mount Qomolangma” in the international bridge circle; Shibadong Village where the idea of “targeted poverty alleviation” was initiated; and, Dehang Canyon which is dubbed as the “hometown of the drum” and a “natural oxygen bar”. The scenic area has unique natural scenery, a long and rich culture, magnificent roads and bridges, and moving stories on poverty alleviation.

Hunan has 10 national 5A-class scenic areas so far, including:
Wulingyuan – Tianmen Mountain Scenic Area, Zhangjiajie;
Nanyue Mount Hengshan Scenic Area, Hengyang;
Shaoshan Scenic Area, Xiangtan;
Yueyang Tower – Junshan Island Scenic Area, Yueyang;
Yuelu Mountain – Orange Isle Scenic Area, Changsha;
Huaminglou Scenic Area, Changsha;
Dongjiang Lake Scenic Area, Chenzhou;
Xinning Langshan Mountain Scenic Area, Shaoyang;
Mausoleum of Emperor Yandi Scenic Area, Zhuzhou; and,
Taohuayuan Scenic Area, Changde.
