The photo above, taken on March 28, shows a Chinese luehdorfia in Hunan Wuyunjie National Nature Reserve. It is a rare butterfly species in China. It was listed in the “International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)” 2012 Red List of Threatened Species. It is hailed as a “national treasure” by insect experts for its gorgeous appearance and scarce quantity. It only appears briefly every March.
In recent years, the reserve administration has strengthened its habitat protection, and its number has stabilized at more than 1,000. This makes the reserve one of the areas with the largest number of Chinese luehdorfia nationwide. (Photo/Fu Cong, Zhang Jingming)
