Huaihua Zhijiang Airport

Basic Information
Huaihua Zhijiang Airport is a military-civilian dual-use regional airport expanded near the original Zhijiang Airport site, officially approved and established by the State Council of the People's Republic of China and the Central Military Commission. It is located in Zhijiang Dong Autonomous County, Huaihua City, Hunan Province, 31 kilometers from downtown Huaihua City and 1.5 kilometers from Zhijiang Dong Autonomous County. The airport was originally built in 1936, serving as an important base for the Sino-American Air Force during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. It was the stationing ground for General Claire Lee Chennault's "Flying Tigers" (American Volunteer Group, AVG), and was known as the "second largest strategic airport in the Far East." After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Zhijiang Airport came under the jurisdiction of the Air Force Command of the former Guangzhou Military Region. Due to the absence of stationed troops, the original airport site was entrusted to the local government for safekeeping.

In December 2001, with the approval of the State Council and the Central Military Commission, the reconstruction and expansion project of the original Zhijiang Airport site commenced. On December 19, 2005, the airport was officially opened for commercial operations, positioned as a business and tourism-oriented airport. In March 2013, the second-phase reconstruction and expansion project began, with a total investment of 424 million yuan. After expansion, the runway was extended from 2,000 meters to 2,600 meters, one new vertical taxiway was added, and the aircraft stands were expanded to three Code C stands and one Code B stand. On December 29, 2016, the terminal building reconstruction and expansion project of the Airport was officially approved by the Hunan Provincial Development and Reform Commission. The total building area of the new terminal is 9,964.88 square meters, and its comprehensive civil works were fully completed by the end of 2021. In June 2021, the terminal auxiliary aircraft stand construction project was officially approved and established after filing with the Hunan Provincial Development and Reform Commission. Construction began in January 2022 and was completed in May 2022. After the expansion, the number of parking stands increased to six (six Code C stands), capable of accommodating full-load takeoffs and landings for Boeing 737-800 and Airbus A321 aircraft, with a designed annual throughput of 1.5 million passengers. Currently, Huaihua Zhijiang Airport has opened flights to 10 cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Nanning, Jinan, Sanya, Lijiang, and Xi'an, which supports Huaihua's economic development, boosts tourism, and facilitates residents' travel.
