Hunan Provincial People's Hospital (The First Affiliated Hospital of Hunan Normal University) is a Class A tertiary general hospital directly under the Hunan Provincial Health Commission, integrating medical treatment, education, and research. The hospital was founded in 1912 by Dr. Yan Fuqing, regarded as the father of modern medicine and the founder of the Chinese Medical Association. In 2006, it partnered with Hunan Normal University to become its First Affiliated Hospital. In 2014, the Clinical Medical College of Hunan Normal University was established, and in 2016, it merged and restructured with the former Hunan Mawangdui Sanatorium, renaming itself Hunan Provincial People's Hospital (The First Affiliated Hospital of Hunan Normal University).
The hospital currently has over 4,200 staff members, 3,679 available beds, and 140 clinical and medical technology departments. Through more than a century of reform and development, it has adopted a framework of homogenized management and differentiated development across four campuses.
The Tianxinge Campus focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of complex and critical illnesses, functioning as a high-level center for clinical diagnosis and treatment, technological innovation, and translational medicine. The Mawangdui Campus specializes in chronic disease management, health medicine, and integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine, establishing centers for geriatrics, rehabilitation medicine, and oncology. The Yuelushan Campus is equipped with air rescue capabilities, fulfills the role of a provincial base for major epidemic response, and serves as an emergency care center. The Rongyuan Campus emphasizes cadre healthcare, basic medical services, and public health, acting as a demonstration hub for large Class A tertiary hospitals to extend resources into community services.
The hospital is a designated institution for a comprehensive national regional medical center, a national cardiovascular disease regional medical center, and a national geriatric disease regional medical center under the "Provincial-Ministerial Co-construction" framework. It is also a pilot unit for a national "flagship" hospital of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine and a demonstration hospital for high-quality development in Hunan Province. Furthermore, it serves as the Hunan Provincial Emergency Center, the Hunan Provincial Emergency Medical Rescue Center, and the National (Hunan) Emergency Medical Rescue Team.
The hospital currently has 6 national-level key specialties (including those under construction), 3 key cultivation specialties, 32 provincial-level key specialties, and hosts 12 provincial quality control centers. It is home to the Hunan Provincial Institute of Geriatrics, the Hunan Provincial Institute of Emergency Medicine, the Institute of Clinical and Translational Medicine of Hunan Normal University, a postdoctoral research workstation, a national drug clinical trial institution, and 14 provincial-level research platforms. The hospital founded the *Journal of Practical Shock*, is a co-construction unit of the Furong Laboratory, a pilot institution for the national reform project on the five-year clinical medical talent training model, and a national standardized training base for first-year residents and specialists. The hospital has 16 experts receiving special allowances from the State Council and the provincial government, 8 provincial outstanding youth and Hunan Talent awardees, 42 experts under provincial "121" and health high-level talent programs, 1 renowned provincial traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, 12 visiting experts from the national "Thousand Talents Program" and "Changjiang Scholars" programs, 39 experts in second-tier professional and technical positions, 296 with senior professional titles, and 334 doctoral and master's supervisors.
