Hunan Children's Hospital was officially established and opened to the public on June 1, 1987. As a children's hospital affiliated with Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University, it is a Class A tertiary children's hospital integrating medical care, teaching, scientific research, rehabilitation, and preventive healthcare. Covering an area of 50 mu, the hospital has 1,800 planned beds and over 2,000 staff members. It has 11 National Key Clinical Specialties, 15 Provincial Key Clinical Specialties, 1 National Science and Technology Innovation Platform (cultivation project), 2 Provincial Key Laboratories, 10 Provincial Clinical Research Centers, and 14 Provincial Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment Centers. It was the first hospital in the province to pass the ISO9001/14001 international quality and environmental system certification and has won the China Soong Ching Ling Pediatric Medicine Award four times. The hospital is the founding unit of the National Children's Regional Medical Center.
The hospital is the first children's hospital in China approved for dual qualifications in liver and kidney transplantation. It serves as the leading institution of the Hunan Provincial Rare Disease Alliance for Children and the host institution for the Hunan Pediatric Quality Control Center and the Hunan Pediatric Surgery Quality Control Center. It has conducted the world's first percutaneous transcatheter femoral vein biodegradable ventricular septal defect occluder implantation. Core technologies such as pediatric liver and kidney transplantation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, multimodal treatment of brainstem and deep midline brain tumors, surgical treatment of refractory pediatric epilepsy, comprehensive treatment of pediatric cerebrovascular diseases, diagnosis and treatment of congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, surgical endoscopic techniques, endoscopic technology, and ICG fluorescence staining technology are at the leading level in China. The hospital has established the Hunan Pediatric Medical Research Institute, developed a Children's Clinical Research (Translational) Center, set up a postdoctoral research workstation and a pediatric college, and founded the Academician Chen Zhaolong Expert Workstation. It is a national standardized training base for specialists, a national key professional base for standardized residency training in pediatrics, and a medical graduate training base for Jinan University.
The hospital took the lead in establishing the Hunan Pediatric Medical Alliance, bringing together 267 medical institutions from 10 provinces, and promotes the construction of a high-quality and efficient pediatric medical service system through the "3515" development model. It leads the Hunan congenital heart disease screening project and conducts over 60 charitable public welfare initiatives, including aid for congenital structural malformations, with rescue funds totaling 151 million yuan over the past five years. The hospital has built a one-stop service center for patients, improved smart full-process outpatient services such as "one-window handling" and "one-click bed selection" for hospitalization. It opened China's first theme-based immersive children's health management center, providing systematic, convenient, and efficient health check-up services for adolescents and children aged 0-18. The hospital's official WeChat service account ranks among the top nationwide in women's and children's hospitals. As China's only pediatric medical aid training institution for foreign countries and one of the first "Belt and Road" maternal and child health training demonstration bases, it took the lead in establishing the Developing Countries Children's Health Alliance and initiated the Tanzania Pediatric Capacity Building Project under the Ministry of Science and Technology. It has established the "Children's Autism Diagnosis and Treatment Research Center" with the New York State Institute for Basic Research and the "Children's Cancer Center" with Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
