The construction of the new Xiangtan Museum completed on December 25, 2015 and the museum opened to the public that day. The site covers a floor area of 16,500 square meters and an exhibition area of 8,600 square meters. There is a basic exhibition titled "The Story of Xiangtan" and four special exhibitions featuring celebrities, local impressions, collections, and painting, calligraphy and seal cutting works by Li Fuyu and Li Zao. In addition, there are two temporary exhibition halls covering an area of 1,100 square meters in total.
Currently, the museum is home to 10,301 pieces/sets of cultural relics. Among them, there are 378 pieces/sets of precious cultural relics, including 9 pieces/sets under first-class protection, 30 under second-class protection, and 339 under third-class protection.
The museum was designated as a national second-class museum, a practical education base of study tour for national primary and secondary school students, and a national 3A-level tourist attraction.
