Hunan's installed capacity of new energy reached 41.848 million kilowatts as of the end of November, accounting for 46.2% of the provincial total. The province saw a net increase of 10.5 million kilowatts in new energy capacity this year. The new energy capacity surpassed thermal power to become the largest power source in terms of installed capacity, said the Hunan Energy Regulatory Office of National Energy Administration on December 16, 2025.
In recent years, Hunan has vigorously developed new energy sources, focusing on both centralized and distributed wind power, as well as centralized and distributed photovoltaic power, while also advancing biomass power generation in an orderly manner. Hunan currently has 12.31 million kilowatts of installed wind power capacity and 28.22 million kilowatts of installed photovoltaic capacity, representing growth rates of 9.8% and 50.6% respectively compared to the beginning of the year. Biomass power generation capacity is 1.31 million kilowatts, a decrease of 5.6% from the start of the year due to the withdrawal of a small number of biomass power plants. Notably, distributed photovoltaic capacity has reached 20.03 million kilowatts, an increase of 6.29 million kilowatts since the beginning of the year, accounting for 60% of the total new energy capacity growth.
