The Aviation Economics and Improvement Research Institute (AIR) of the Civil Aviation University of China, in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) High-Quality Development Research Center, jointly released the research findings and the rankings of the 2025 China's top provinces, cities, districts, and airports in civil aviation. The Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport ranks first among the small-sized airports in terms of passenger throughput.

Based on the classification standards of CAAC, the research categorized the airports in Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, and Macao into three types: large-sized (with more than 10 million passenger trips, or over 800,000 tonnes of cargos and parcels, annually), medium-sized (with more than two million passenger trips annually), and small-sized (with less than two million passenger trips annually). The evaluation indicators covered passenger throughput, cargo and parcel throughput, and number of flight takeoffs and landings. Additionally, the research further defined the civil aviation urban areas and the civil aviation cities based on airport scale, and incorporated 2024 GDP data as a measurement indicator of economic strength at the city and provincial levels.

Statistics showed that, the Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport handled 1.964015 million passenger trips in 2024, increasing by 30.8% over the previous year. It recorded 15,330 flight takeoffs and landings, up 20.7% year on year.
