The Changsha New Port Special Railway Line recently marked its second anniversary of operation. As the first port-connecting railway line in the provincial capital Changsha, it has transported 2.471 million tonnes of goods including rolled steel, ores, and coal over the past two years.

Specifically, it transported 301,000 tonnes of goods in its first year, and this figure leaped to 1.45 million tonnes in its second year. During the January–July period of this year, a total of 720,000 tonnes of goods have been handled, with 12,159 freight cars departed and arrived.

With a total length of 4.48 kilometers, the Changsha New Port Special Railway Line stretches from the grain-dedicated line at the Changsha North Railway Station in the north, and ends at the wharf of the Changsha New Port in the south, fully connecting water and rail transport. Its launch transformed the port from a traditional "arrival port" into a "transshipment port," extending the economic hinterland to the northern, southern, and southwestern regions of China.

"This railway line enables enterprises to reduce logistics costs by 50 CNY per tonne, saving over 30 million CNY every year," said a port spokesperson. Leveraging a 12,000-square-meter indoor transshipment warehouse, the port can secure all-weather loading and unloading of high-value goods. Combined with the high capacity and low energy consumption advantages of water transport, an efficient "water-rail-road" multimodal transport system has taken shape. Rolled steel, ores, coal, and other goods can be assembled and distributed rapidly via the line, providing high-efficiency logistics support for Hunan's industries.
