On June 24, the Changsha Metro Group released the "Environmental Impact Report for the Line 5 Extension Project (Draft for Public Comment)." According to the report, the extension of Line 5 will run in an east-west direction, spanning approximately 9.54 kilometers from Datuopu Station to Maozhutang Station (excluded). The entire route will be underground, featuring 7 stations.
The Line 5 extension will primarily run along the planned Qiangti Road, Tianxin Avenue, Huanbao Avenue, and Wanjiali Road. Construction is scheduled to take place from 2025 to 2029, with a duration of 51 months and a total investment of 5.945 billion CNY.
As an extension of the backbone line in the eastern part of Changsha city proper, the Line 5 extension will shorten travel times between the city's southern area and downtown area, as well as the Xingsha-Mapoling cluster. Together with Line 1, the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan Intercity Railway, and the planned Changsha-Zhuzhou Express Line, the extension will form a "rail + intercity" transportation network, connecting the southern area to the main urban areas of Changsha, Zhuzhou, and Xiangtan. This initiative will further bolster the development of southern Changsha.
