The United Nations Office at Nairobi and the Chinese Embassy in Kenya jointly hosted an event to mark the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations on June 5. Hunan's Mango International Art Troupe and African performing artists together staged a variety of brilliant performances.
The event featured innovative classical music and China-Africa collaborative performances. Zhang Yinyue, top-tier performer and Erhu virtuoso from the Hunan Song and Dance Theatre, and Lu Yuwei, a Pipa virtuoso respectively performed music with distinctive Hunan characteristics and national flavor. Liu Jie, vice director of the Hunan Kunqu Opera Troupe, showcased the unique charm of Kunqu opera. Hunan tenor Qiu Taowu and a Kenyan singer together staged a classical Kenyan song. A "Shoulder Ballet" rendition of "Swan Lake," a Kenyan fashion show, and performances of traditional Kenyan songs and dances from the Bomas of Kenya were staged successively, ignited a surge of excitement at the event.
This was the second time that a performing troupe of the Hunan Performance Group has staged shows at the invitation of the UN, after the debut of the concert—A Panorama of Hunan Province at the Palais des Nations in Geneva during the United National Chinese Language Day Programme celebrations last April.
The Mango International Art Troupe also performed at the opening ceremony of the China-Kenya Culture and Tourism Season.
