Barbados is an island country located at the eastern end of the Lesser Antilles in the southeastern Caribbean Sea in North America. Covering an area of 431 square kilometers, it is home to 289,000 people. It was the earliest country in Eastern Caribbean to establish diplomatic relations with China. In June 2023, Hunan and Bridgetown, capital of Barbados, knotted friendship province-city ties.

During the visit, Govern Mao met with Barbados' Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, Deputy Prime Minister Santia Bradshaw, and Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Indal Weir.

Mao quoted a Chinese saying that “Distance cannot separate true friends who remain close even when thousands of miles apart”. In recent years, the exchanges and cooperation between Hunan and Barbados has entered the "fast lane" of development, especially in such areas as friendship-city relations, agriculture, and education. This has brought tangible benefits to the people of both places.

At present, Hunan has been following the beautiful blueprint drawn by President Xi Jinping, and making continuous efforts to achieve the "Three Hubs" goals, in a bid to write a Hunan chapter in Chinese modernization. Hunan is willing to maintain high-level exchanges with Barbados, and continuously enhance mutual political trust, deepening cooperation in the fields of agriculture, education, economy and trade, energy, culture and tourism, so as to promote high-quality implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative in a thorough and in-depth manner, boosting China-Barbados cooperation to achieve fruitful results.

Mia Mottley and other Barbados officials noted that the cooperation between Barbados and China is fruitful and promising. Barbados will actively participate in China’s Belt and Road Initiative and Global Development Initiative, and fully learn from China's successful experience in development. Barbados is looking forward to giving full play to the resource endowment and complementary industrial advantages of both sides, and carrying out in-depth and practical cooperation in tackling climate change, agriculture, energy construction, and human resources development, among other issues, so as to benefit both places and the people.
