The Hurun Research Institute recently released the Global Unicorn Index 2024, which is a ranking of the world's start-ups founded after the year 2000, worth at least one billion USD and not yet listed on a public exchange.
Five Hunan enterprises made the list, namely, SANY Heavy-duty Trucks, Lingshi Henmang (also known as "Snack is Busy", a snack chain shop), CNGR New Energy, CiDi, and Wenheyou.
The shortlisted Hunan enterprises cover logistics, retail, new energy, AI, and food and beverage sectors. Among them, SANY Heavy-duty Trucks was worth 14 billion CNY, topping the Hunan candidates and ranking 537th on the list. Lingshi Henmang and CNGR New Energy made their debut on the list, both worth 11 billion and tying for 759th place. CiDi and Wenheyou tied for 976th place, worth 8.5 billion CNY.
There are a total of 1,453 unicorn enterprises in the world, with a total market value of 4.6 trillion USD, up 7% over last year.
China alone has 340 unicorn enterprises, ranking only second to the United States. China added 56 new unicorn enterprises in 2023, which means the country added more than one each week in the past year.
China's unicorn enterprises are mainly in the sectors of artificial intelligence, semiconductors and new energy, said the report.
