Recently the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of Science and Technology announced the 2023 list of 50 national natural resources science popularization bases. Five places from Hunan Province were shortlisted, namely, the Hunan Museum of Geology, Changsha Planning Exhibition Center, Hunan 409 Geology Science Popularization Park, Hunan Pingjiang Shiniuzhai National Geo-park, and Central South University Earth Science Innovation Center.

The national natural resources science popularization base is an important place to display the scientific and technological achievements of natural resources, popularize the knowledge of earth science, promote ecological advancement, and advocate the establishment of the awareness of resource conservation and harmonious coexistence between man and nature. The base is an important part of national featured science popularization bases, covering science popularization venues, natural resources scenarios, and scientific research.

According to a relevant person in charge of the Hunan Provincial Department of Natural Resources, in recent years, Hunan has actively explored the potential of science popularization venues and promoted the construction of the "museum-school alliance" project for science popularization. The province has continued to carry out the activity of "popularizing natural resources knowledge in old communities", and has held high-level and high-quality science popularization events such as the Hunan Provincial Natural Resources Science Popularization Contest and the Hunan Youth Astronomical Science Competition, promoting the high-quality development of natural resources science popularization.
