Chuanshanping Town in Miluo City, Yueyang, has been known as a "Town of Chinese Ink Brush Art". It boasts a long history of ink brush making dating back to the Han Dynasty according to historical records. The traditional craft of brush making includes three core sections – Shuipen, Doubi, and Zhengbi, respectively preparing the brush hair, installing the brush head into the stalk, and fine-tuning of the brush. More than 100 procedures should be handled to complete a brush, including selecting the materials; combining the hair with different lengths and textures; combing the hair; binding the hair into a brush head; and, fine tuning. In 2016, Chuanshan ink brush making techniques were officially listed as one of Hunan's fourth batch of provincial-level intangible cultural heritage items. In recent years, the town has leveraged the advantages of the village collective economy, uniting the family workshops, and striving to build a Chuanshan ink brush demonstration base.
