A traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) delegation from Hong Kong visited Hunan from October 25 to 27. The visit aimed to deepen cooperation and exchanges between Hong Kong and Hunan and promote the development of the TCM industry.
Hunan has established five overseas TCM cooperation centers in countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative, including the Sino-Pakistan TCM & Ethnomedicine Research Center, the Sino-Pakistan TCM Center, the China-Zimbabwe Acupuncture Center, and the China-Germany TCM Center. Additionally, it has set up herbal medicine cultivation bases in countries like South Africa and Laos. Hunan's Chinese medicinal herbs, such as poria cocos and polygonatum odoratum, are exported to more than 20 countries and regions in Europe, America, and Southeast Asia through import and export enterprises.
The delegation was led by Li Ying-sang, a Hong Kong deputy to the National People's Congress and chairman of the Federation of the Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Chinese Medicines Traders Association. He noted that Hong Kong has established the TCM Development Fund to promote TCM advancement and support TCM research and talent training. Hong Kong's first Chinese medicine hospital is expected to be completed in 2025.
Hunan has taken the lead in building the Hunan-Jiangxi-Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao TCM Industrial Chain Collaborative Development Alliance to promote TCM abroad. Additionally, the Hunan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) has collaborated with over 20 departments of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), such as the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau and the Department of Health, to facilitate Hong Kong and Macao CPPCC members' research on TCM and cultural tourism in Hunan.
Representatives from the Coordination Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR attended the visit. They hoped to take this activity as an opportunity to further enhance economic and trade cooperation between Hong Kong and Hunan. They also expected to leverage TCM companies and trade platforms in both sides to help TCM go global.
During their stay in Hunan, the delegation also learned about the development of Hunan's TCM industry.
