An annual list of the national geographical indicators (GI) protection demonstration areas was released recently. Liuyang fireworks and Sangzhi County's GI protection areas in Hunan made the list.

Hunan's Xinhuang as well as Anhua dark tea and Baojing golden tea demonstration areas had previously been shortlisted for national GI protection demonstration areas, according to an official in charge of the provincial intellectual property (IP) authority. The newly-added Sangzhi demonstration area covers six GI products, including local white tea, reed leaves, honey, konjak, tea oil, and white radishes.

Known as the "City of Fireworks", Liuyang in Changsha City is a global producer and supplier of fireworks and firecrackers. The Liuyang government has long focused on enhancing GI protection, establishing a comprehensive mechanism and standardizing the use of the GI designation. These efforts have ensured unique product characteristics and quality, while also enhancing the reputation of Liuyang fireworks as a distinctive industry and a significant driver for rural revitalization in Hunan Province. In 2022, Liuyang's total output value of the fireworks industrial cluster reached 30.2 billion CNY. Liuyang fireworks have been exported to more than 100 countries and regions throughout the world, contributing 90% of the provincial and 60% of the national export value, making it the leading fireworks producer in the country.

Sangzhi is a key county to receive assistance from the National Intellectual Property Administration in pursuing rural revitalization. The county government has given play to the advantages of IP products and developed a GI-centered economy. With Sangzhi white tea and reed leaves industries as the core, the county has set an example of IP-based poverty alleviation. At present, there are more than 100 GI product producers in the county, with an annual output value of 1.3 billion CNY. Its white tea plantations, covering 79,500 mu (over 5,326 hectares) in total, can produce 4,200 tons of tea leaves and 580 million CNY of output value annually. Five large-sized reed-leaf companies produce 15,000 tons of refrigerated reed leaves and over 3,000 tons of dried reed leaves annually, accounting for 70% and 20% share of the national market respectively, an industry employing more than 40,000 farmers from 2,3000 households.
