Shen Xiaoming, secretary of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee, met in Changsha with Nicholas Burns, the U.S. ambassador to China, and his entourage, on the afternoon of September 8, 2023. Deputy Secretary Li Dianxun attended.

On September 8, Secretary Shen met with Ambassador Burns in Changsha.

Secretary Shen, on behalf of the provincial Party committee and the provincial government, welcomed the guests and introduced the history, culture, and economic and social development of Hunan Province. He noted that the Hunan people have always exhibited a spirit of patriotism and broad vision, and he highlighted the long-term civil exchanges between Hunan and the U.S. In recent years, both sides have continued to deepen and expand cooperation in such fields as economy and trade, healthcare, education, and the humanities.

The Secretary saw the ambassador's visit to Hunan as an opportunity to jointly further implement the consensus reached by the presidents of both countries during their meeting in Bali. He hoped that joint efforts will be made to strengthen humanistic and economic and trade exchanges; further enhance mutual understanding and trust; and, advance collaboration towards common prosperity for everyone, he added.

Ambassador Burns remarked that this was his first visit to Hunan and he was deeply impressed by Changsha's vitality and vigor. For a long time, the U.S. and Hunan have been in close contact in fields such as medicine, education and other areas, and both sides enjoyed a sound foundation of cooperation. He hoped to further strengthen visits between the two sides; continue to excel in student exchange programs; promote communication and exchanges within the business community; and, actively promote cooperation in public health, education, agriculture, economy and trade, and other areas, in order to achieve new greater results.

Provincial leader Xie Weijiang and the U.S. consul general in Wuhan Melissa Lan, also attended.
