August 29 marked China’s 20th Surveying and Mapping Publicity Day. The Hunan Provincial Department of Natural Resources released the 2023 edition of the standard map of the province.

A total of 425 standard maps at provincial, city, and county levels were released. Among them, there are 17 provincial standard maps in five different scales, including folio, 8vo (octavo), 16mo (sextodecimo), 32mo (tricesimo-secondo), and 64mo (sexagesimo-quarto). There are 42 standard maps at the city or prefecture level and 366 standard maps at the county (county-level city and district) level.

The standard maps are based on the basic geographic information database of Hunan Province, the standard drawing methods for boundaries of administrative divisions, the latest boundaries, standard place names, and relevant data from other physiographic factors and special reports on human thematic elements. Since 2012, a total of 1,352 maps have been released.

In order to promote national mapping awareness, the Hunan Provincial Department of Natural Resources has also initiated a series of activities including national mapping publicity events in schools and communities and on media platforms, a fun map knowledge challenge, and a children's hand-drawn map competition. The public can access free map downloads through the "Tianditu · Hunan Geographic Information Public Service Platform" .
