Workers of an agricultural products company were busy sorting and packing cabbage and peppers to load onto refrigerated trucks on June 18, 2023. These fresh vegetables were ready to be shipped overseas through Shenzhen Port. The Hanshou-planted vegetables sell well in more than 10 countries and regions, with an annual export volume of 45,000 tons.
Hanshou is a national major county of vegetable production and the largest professional vegetable plantation in Hunan. It boasts a perennial vegetable sowing area of 450,000 mu (3,000 ha.), an annual output of nearly 2 million tons, a comprehensive output value of 4.5 billion CNY, and more than 300 varieties of vegetables. It has formed a new paradigm of vegetable industrial development, including an aquatic vegetable industrial circle around the West Dongting Lake; a vegetable industrial park around the Weidi Lake; a vegetable export industrial belt; a vegetable processing industrial belt; and, a specialty vegetable industrial belt in hilly land area.
The county has fully implemented standardized vegetable production; accelerated promoting new technologies and varieties; guided vegetable enterprises to pay close attention to the source of production; and, regulated the use of agricultural materials, to ensure both quality and quantity improvement of Hanshou vegetables. It has provided professional guidance such as record registration, safety risks monitoring, and traceability management for vegetable enterprises. There are now six vegetable export enterprises and six registration certificates applied for outbound vegetable plantation in the county. A total of 16,000 mu (1,067 ha.) of export vegetable plantation inspection and quarantine filing area for planting leaf vegetables, melons, root vegetables, and solanaceous vegetables has passed approval.
Hanshou County has established export channels for fresh vegetables with more than 10 countries and regions such as Spain and Russia, with an annual export value of more than 40 million USD.
