On May 17th, the 2023 International Museum Day Hunan Events kicked off at the Hunan Museum. The International Museum Day falls on May 18th annually, with its theme this year being "Museums, Sustainability and Wellbeing."

A series of activities were held to demonstrate the positive role of museums in creating a better life.

At the opening ceremony, the organizer released a teaser for the museum documentary “Discover Hunan Through National Treasure”. The museum documentary showcased the profound history and culture of Hunan Province, the splendid and far-reaching Hunan civilization, and the Hunanese’ spirit of caring about the people and pioneering.

Emojis about a painting on silk “Daoyintu” were also issued on site. The manuscript drawing was unearthed from the Mawangdui Tomb No. 3 in 1973. It contains colored drawings of 44 figures in standing and sitting postures performing daoyin exercises.

Yu Yanjiao, director of the Mawangdui Han Tomb Collections, Research & Exhibition Center, and Long Zhuan, vice dean of Sports and Arts College of the Hunan University of Chinese Medicine, briefed the audience on the research and application results of "Daoyintu" and taught them to practice the postures with professional dancers.

The ceremony also announced that Hengyang City will host the 2024 International Museum Day Hunan Events.

The list of Hunan candidates for national and provincial museum volunteer service cases was announced. Shaoshan Mao Zedong Memorial Hall’s publicity campaign carrying forward red gene and three other cases were selected as the national museum volunteer service model cases for 2023. The construction and management of the autonomous volunteer committee of Changsha Museum and four other cases were selected as provincial museum volunteer service recommended cases for 2023.

In addition, museums across the province plan to hold colorful activities around May 18th, including a light show, mobile exhibitions, culture lectures, public welfare authentication, and social education.

This year’s Hunan events were hosted by the Hunan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism and the Hunan Provincial Department of Cultural Heritage and organized by the Hunan Museum.
