UK-China International Forum on Green and Smart Construction Opens in Changsha

The UK-China International Forum on Green and Smart Construction opened in Changsha on March 23rd, 2023. Themed “How can technology innovation support carbon peak and carbon neutrality in the construction sector” explored such topics as green construction, smart construction, prefabricated building, and zero-carbon community. The participants exchanged views on new technologies and progress of green and smart construction and promoted sci-tech exchanges and cooperation between the UK and China. 

Jane Fulbrook, acting regional outreach counsellor of the British Consulate-General in Guangzhou, noted that both UK and China had set carbon goals. The UK is striving to achieve the target of net-zero emissions by 2050. She hoped that both countries would take this forum as an opportunity to enhance cooperation in technological innovation and industrial development and jointly make the world more sustainable and resilient..

“Hunan is a construction powerhouse, with the total output value of the construction industry exceeding 1.45 trillion CNY in 2022,” said Liu Nianlai, deputy director of the Hunan Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. Hunan Province will prioritize promoting a green and smart mode of construction to progress in constructing high-quality and green buildings, developing green and low-carbon ecological demonstration areas, and boosting renovation of old residential communities, urban renewal, and building of green and integrated residential communities. These efforts will contribute to achieving the “dual carbon goals” and a comprehensive green transition of urban and rural development.

Hunan is willing to intensify sci-tech cooperation with the UK to provide science and technology supports to achieving China’s “dual carbon goals” and the UK’s target of “net-zero” greenhouse gas emissions, and meanwhile, make greater contributions to the global challenges such as climate change, human health, and food safety, said Zeng Lixin, deputy director of the Hunan Department of Science and Technology.

The Hunan Department of Science and Technology, the Hunan Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, and the British Consulate-General in Guangzhou hosted the forum. More than 150 experts and scholars participated via online and offline channels.
