The 19th and 23rd groups of the Hunan medical aid team, which were sent to the Republic of Zimbabwe and the Republic of Sierra Leone, respectively, returned to China on March 9 and 13, 2023. They had completed a 14-month international medical aid mission, according to the Hunan Provincial Health Commission.

There are 31 members in the medical aid groups, including 11 in Zimbabwe and 20 in Sierra Leone. They set off to aid Africa in January 2022 and December 2021, respectively. For more than a year, the two medical teams had adopted advanced medical technology to relieve the sufferings of the African people and taken practical actions to demonstrate the benevolence of the doctors overseas.

Hunan is one of the provinces that undertakes China's international medical aid missions. It sent the first medical team to Sierra Leone in 1973 and the first to Zimbabwe in 1985. Over the past 50 years, Hunan has sent out 44 groups of long-term medical workers comprising 562 individuals to work abroad. They treated nearly 1 million patients and trained more than 9,000 medical personnel for recipient countries.
