The National Ethnic Affairs Commission of the People's Republic of China recently approved to set up the Cross-Strait Ethnic Minorities Exchange and Cooperation Base in Zhijiang Dong Autonomous County. This is another national-level cross-Strait exchange base settled in Zhijiang, after the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council approved the establishment of a cross-Strait exchange base in Zhijiang in 2011.
Zhijiang is one of the five largest Dong autonomous counties in China and a demonstration county for ethnic unity and progress in Hunan Province. The Dong ethnic group accounts for 58.9% of the county's total population. Twenty-four ethnic groups such as Dong, Miao, and Tujia, and Han prosper together harmoniously here.
In recent years, Zhijiang has carried out in-depth exchanges and cooperation with Taiwan, based on its rich and unique history and culture of the War of Resistance, ethnic culture, Mazu culture, and ecological culture. It had held the "Cross-Strait Peace and Culture Tour" for nine sessions, and established a cross-Strait exquisite agricultural demonstration park. Zhijiang now has 7 Taiwan-funded enterprises with a total investment of more than 200 million yuan, covering such fields as electronics, plastics, modern agriculture, and tourism.
