Recently, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration announced the assessment results of the National Terrestrial Ecosystem Position Observation Research Station. Hunan's Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan (CZT) City Cluster and Huitong forest ecosystem national position observation research stations were awarded for excellence.

The terrestrial ecosystem position observation research station refers to the field science platform distributed in typical ecological regions throughout the country with terrestrial ecosystem as the research object, which is divided into six categories: forest, wetland, desert, sandy land, shelter forest, and stony desert. Through the stations, researchers can accurately grasp ecological status, carry out ecological benefit evaluation, and provide a scientific basis for making decisions in national ecological civilization construction and participating in international negotiations and implementation.

In order to fully stimulate the role of ecological stations, this year, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration conducted a comprehensive assessment of the operation of 166 ecological stations in the past five years from six aspects, including data observation, scientific research output, application of achievements, condition guarantee, talent training and institutional construction. Thirty-two of them were rated as excellent.

CZT City Cluster Forest Ecosystem National Position Observation Research Station is the first ecological station in China with urban forest as the observation theme, which plays an important role in long-term monitoring and studying the relationship between forest ecosystem function, human activities and economic and social development, and in realizing the sound operation of urban forest ecosystem.

The Huitong Forest Ecosystem National Position Observation Research Station has monitored the structure and function of zonal evergreen broad-leaved forests for a long time, explored the evolution of forest resources from various angles, and estimated the carbon sequestration potential of Hunan forest ecosystem for the first time. These efforts provide important scientific and technological support for regional forest ecosystem management and carbon sequestration.
