On December 8, a mobilization meeting was held at the Xiangjiang New Area Xiangyin Region to mark the start of construction of the Xiangjiang Waterway Yugong Port Project. Hence, Hunan will have a new port linking rivers and seas.
The Yugong Port, 69 km from Changsha's Xianing Port and 87 km from Yueyang's Chenglingji Port, has distinctive location advantages. It will be built as a significant part of Hunan's port system featuring "one hub, multiple key ports, and extended port areas", according to the provincial water transportation development plan. The port, as an important water transportation hub serving the "Strengthening Provincial Capital" Plan, will play a crucial role in boosting advantage-based development of the important ports at the middle and lower reaches of the Xiangjiang River, improving the comprehensive transportation system of Hunan Province, and promoting integrated development of infrastructure and logistics.
The Xiangjiang New Area authority took the lead in establishing a Yugong Port construction joint meeting mechanism together with Yueyang City and Xiangyin County governments, to jointly push forward the project progress. In this September, a cooperation agreement on the development and construction of the port and a framework agreement on establishing a joint venture for the project was reached. In October, the first phase of the project was approved. An enclave port of the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan metropolitan area is taking shape.
The Yugong Port Project, with a total investment of about 5.16 billion CNY, will have 12 berths and a logistics park. Beyond that, about 3.22 billion CNY will be invested to construct a collection and distribution system, including special roads and rail lines to the port. The project will be progressed in three phases, and be completed at the end of 2027.
The first phase inaugurated that day has an investment of 1.295 billion CNY. It will cover 1,620 meters of water front and consist of four 3,000-ton berths. Its throughput capacity will reach 9.9 million tons. It is scheduled to be completed and start operation in December 2024.
