On November 9, the Hunan Provincial Forestry Department announced that the synchronous survey of wintering waterbirds in Dongting Lake in Hunan Province between 2022 and 2023 was officially launched.

The synchronous survey will last until March next year, and the scope will include 23 counties (county-level cities or districts), 6 nature reserves and 20 national wetland parks in Dongting Lake area. Severe drought in the Dongting Lake has a certain impact on the foraging and resting of waterbirds. This year's survey sites will be adjusted based on last year's survey.

After  completing the synchronous survey, the Hunan Provincial Forestry Department will compile the "2022-2023 Dongting Lake Synchronous Waterbirds Survey Report" based on the summary and analysis of the previous survey data. The department will conduct in-depth research on the influencing mechanism of severe drought on the migration of waterbirds, establish a data system for protecting the biodiversity of the Dongting Lake to cope with extreme weather, and provide support for building a solid ecological security barrier for wetlands in the Dongting Lake area.
