Mao Weiming, deputy secretary of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee and governor of the People's Government of Hunan Province, inspected a low-cadmium rice experimental and demonstration base in Xiangtan County on the morning of November 1, 2022. He asked to thoroughly implement the spirit of the 20th CPC National Congress; steadily shoulder the responsibility of food security; and, continue to promote the vitalization of the seed industry, so as to contribute Hunan's strength to the protection of national food security and fulfill Hunan's responsibility.

At the symposium, Governor Mao congratulated the Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (HNAAS) on its breakthrough progress made in the research of low-cadmium rice. He noted that in recent years, HNAAS, together with relevant research units inside and outside Hunan Province, has steadily promoted technical research and cultivated new varieties of low-cadmium rice with excellent agronomic traits. It was a specific action of Hunan Province to resolutely implement the important instructions of President Xi Jinping on "ensuring that the Chinese people must have firm control over their own food supply", and another major achievement made by Hunan's agricultural science and technology circles, he remarked.

He called for accelerating evaluation, popularization, and application of low-cadmium rice research outcomes. Efforts should be made to carry out quick evaluation of research outcomes; focus on strengthening demonstration and promotion; continue to deepen breeding research; further strengthen core germplasm resources and major low-cadmium rice variety innovation; and, continuously consolidate Hunan's international leading position in the field of low-cadmium rice research. We should effectively form a strong synergy to promote low-cadmium rice, and strengthen the support of elements, publicity and promotion, and collaboration, he added.
