China has 105 metropolises, including 7 megacities, 14 cities XL, 14 Ⅰ-type metropolises and 70 Ⅱ-type metropolises, according to the Tabulation on 2020 China Population Census by County compiled by the Office of the Leading Group of the State Council for the Seventh National Population Census recently.
Megacities are cities with a permanent population of 10 million or more in urban areas. They include Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Tianjin.
Cities XL are cities with a permanent population between 5 and 10 million in urban areas. They include Wuhan, Dongguan, Xi'an, Hangzhou, Foshan, Nanjing, Shenyang, Qingdao, Jinan, Changsha, Harbin, Zhengzhou, Kunming, and Dalian.
It is worth noting that among the 105 metropolises, there are four county-level cities, namely Kunshan in Jiangsu Province, Yiwu in Zhejiang Province, Cixi in Zhejiang Province, and Jinjiang in Fujian Province, which are all Ⅱ-type metropolises.
The data showed that Changsha has a permanent population of 10.0479 million including 5.5464 million of urban population. Thus, it is listed as a 'City XL'.
