Secretary Zhang Highlights Protection, Inheritance, Innovative Development of Hunan Embroidery

Zhang Qingwei, secretary of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee and director of the Standing Committee of the Hunan Provincial People's Congress, visited the Hunan Embroidery Research Institute on the morning of August 29, 2022. He came to inspect the development of Hunan embroidery industry and the traditional culture of Chinese nation. He asked to thoroughly implement the spirit of President Xi Jinping's important speeches, directives, and instructions on Hunan Province; strengthen the protection and inheritance of intangible cultural heritage (ICH); endow traditional Hunan embroidery in the new era with new connotation and modern expression; and, enable more people to experience Hunan embroidery — "the beauty of Hunan on the needle tips".

Hunan embroidery is one of the four major embroideries in China and one of the national ICHs. The Hunan Embroidery Research Institute is a state-level demonstration base for the preservation of ICH items. Secretary Zhang inspected the development and evolution, history and inheritance, and innovation and development of the Hunan embroidery craftsmanship at the Hunan Embroidery Museum. He noted that Hunan embroidery has a long history and exquisite craftsmanship, and generations of Hunan embroidery inheritors have adhered to the cause and made great achievements. He called for:

- Inheriting and protecting the ICH of Hunan embroidery, dig deep and continuously enrich the connotation of Hunan embroidery culture, and promote the integration and development of ICH and tourism;

- Focusing on the "Belt and Road" initiative, enriching exhibits and contents of the museum, making good use of its collections, and further displaying, inheriting, and developing Hunan embroidery culture; and,

- Striving to promote new and creative craftsmanship, and help the Hunan embroidery market to flourish.

Relevant departments should strengthen support for the development of Hunan embroidery, increase publicity of the representative inheritors of Hunan embroidery, and continuously enhance the brand awareness and influence of Hunan embroidery, he added.
