The 2022 World Environment Day Hunan celebration was held on June 5. Hunan’s exemplary cases for building beautiful rivers and lakes in 2021 were unveiled at the event.

The “protecting Yangtze River” campaign was launched across the province in 2018. Since then, the government has firmly followed the guideline on managing mountains, waters, forests, farmland, lakes and grassland, and taken measures to solve the problems in water eco-environment and prevent degradation of the water ecosystem. The water eco-environment has been improved unprecedentedly. The proportion of the surface water rated good or excellent quality increased by nearly 10 percentage points in the past four years. In 2021, the state-controlled water sections with bad quality surface water below Grade V had been eliminated, and that in three cities and one prefecture reached Grade II. All drinking water sources in the regions at and above the prefecture-level reached the national drinking water quality standard.

A picturesque scenery of “the river green down to the bed, up and down fish in shallows glide” is normally seen in the 13 cities and one prefecture of Hunan Province. Based on field investigations and expert review, 19 rivers and lakes stood out and were shortlisted for Hunan’s exemplary cases of “beautiful rivers and lakes”. They are:
- Liuyang River;
- Songya Lake in Changsha County;
- Zhengshui River section in Hengyang County;
- Mianshui River Shennong Valley section in Yanling County, Zhuzhou;
- Mishui River section in Chaling county town, Zhuzhou;
- Lianshui River in Xiangxiang City, Xiangtan;
- Longxi River Wenping Town section in Wugang City, Shaoyang;
- Nanshui River in Longhui County, Shaoyang;
- Nanhu Lake in Yueyang City;
- Xianyang Lake in Shimen County, Changde;
- Suoxi River in Wulingyuan, Zhangjiajie;
- Zhexi Reservoir in Anhua County, Yiyang;
- Siqing Reservoir in Beihu District, Chenzhou;
- Centian River in Jianghua Yao Autonomous County, Yongzhou;
- Shunshui River in Lanshan County, Yongzhou;
- Wushui River in Zhijiang Dong Autonomous County, Huaihua;
- Xushui River Simeng section in Xupu County, Huaihua;
- Gaodeng River in Louxing District, Loudi; and,
- Mengdong River in Yongshun County, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture.
