June 5, 2022 marks the 51st World Environment Day designated by the United Nations. The 2022 World Environment Day Changsha event was held at the Binjiang Cultural Park on June 1, 2022. Wu Guiying, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee and secretary of the CPC Changsha Municipal Committee, announced the start of the event, and presented plaques to the city’s model towns and villages in ecological civilization construction in 2021.

Pan Biling, deputy director of the Hunan Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment and chief member of the Hunan Provincial Committee of China Association for Promoting Democracy, and Changsha municipal leaders Liu Yongbing, Zhang Baiyun, Liu Hui and Huang Feng participated.

The theme of the event is “Building a Clean and Beautiful World”. During the event, the Changsha Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment issued the Report on the Ecological Environment of Changsha City in 2021. There were two exhibition areas displaying Changsha’s ecological environment treatment achievements and new energy and clean environmental protection industries respectively, and one interaction area featuring carbon neutrality. Contests will also be conducted to collect environmental protection-themed photography works and paintings. These activities aim to encourage more Changsha citizens to understand, join, and support environmental protection, and work together to build a new ecological and livable modern Changsha.

In recent years, Changsha has thoroughly implemented Xi Jinping's thought on ecological civilization, and followed a path of prioritizing ecological conservation and pursuing green development. Its ecological and environmental quality has been continuously improved. In 2021, the overall quality of surface water in Changsha is excellent, and the annual proportion of water with excellent or good quality in the city's 32 water monitoring (national or provincial) sections reaches 100%. Four rivers and lakes, including the Guitang River, are awarded as “Excellent Cases of Beautiful Rivers and Lakes” in the province, and the city’s profile as a city with beautiful natural landscapes is raised. The water qualification rate of municipal and county-level centralized drinking water sources reached 100%. Environmental noise in urban areas and traffic noise on urban roads have dropped, and the sound environment quality is stable.
