During the Spring Festival travel rush from January 17 to February 25, the total number of passenger trips delivered by various means of transport in Hunan province was nearly 36.05 million, a year-on-year decrease of 11.94%, according to the Office of the Hunan Provincial Spring Festival Travel Rush Coordination Group on February 26.
The highway passenger transport volume continued to drop significantly. The passenger trips delivered by highway declined 27.93% to more than 18.5 million. And the passenger trips delivered by waterway dropped 17.93% to 855.8 thousand.
Railway and civil aviation passenger flow continued to grow. Hunan's railways handled more than 14 million passenger trips, a year-on-year increase of 18.2%.
Hunan's nine major airports handled more than 2.3 million passenger trips, a year-on-year increase of 15.4%. The passenger throughput at the Changsha Huanghua International Airport reached 1.898 million, a year-on-year increase of 18.5%.
Hunan's highway network traffic flow bucked the trend and was at a high level. The province's traffic volume at highway entrances and exits totaled 110 million, including 80% of small passenger cars. The figure was up 7.29% compared with last year.
The single-day traffic volume and daily average traffic volume both hit a record high this year. The traffic flow reached its peak at more than 5 million on February 6, the sixth day of the first month of the Chinese calendar, 2.65 times higher than usual. The daily average traffic volume during the 40-day travel rush was 2.774 million, 1.39 times higher than usual.
During the Spring Festival travel rush, five rounds of freezing weather or snowstorms occurred in the province. Hunan has launched severe weather early warning services in a timely manner. A total of 2,222,900 weather warning text messages have been sent to road passenger transport, road freight, and water transport enterprises.
There were no COVID-19 cases spread during the Spring Festival travel rush. There were no long-term and large-scale traffic congestion, no large-scale flows of passengers left stranded, and no major traffic accidents. The security situation during the travel rush period has registered stable performance with good momentum.
