The Xingsha Customs announced on January 24 that, Changsha's total import and export value reached a new high of 278.03 billion yuan in 2021, up 18.2% from the previous year. Among them, the exports amounted to 197.75 billion yuan, up 27.7%. The export volume and growth rate ranked 13th and 12th nationwide, respectively.
Changsha's foreign trade modes continued to improve. Last year, the imports and exports of the general trade rose 35.2% to 226.14 billion yuan, accounting for over 80% of the city's total in the same period.
Major trading partners became diversified. The top three trading partners for Changsha in 2021 were ASEAN, the United States and the European Union, with the trade value reaching 97.7 billion yuan, 81.59 billion yuan and 61.84 billion yuan, respectively. Meanwhile, Changsha's imports and exports to other RCEP members and countries along the Belt and Road had maintained steady growth.
The structure of imported and exported products continued to improve. In 2021, Changsha exported mechanical and electrical products worth 89.82 billion yuan, an increase of 18%, constituting 45.4% of the city's total export value. In the same year, Changsha’s exports of labor-intensive products rose 36.1% to 49.54 billion yuan, accounting for 25.1% of the city's total export value. In terms of imports, in 2021, Changsha’s imports of semiconductor manufacturing equipment rose 325% to 6.19 billion yuan, and its imports of iron ore and concentrate amounted to 4.09 billion yuan, up 100.4%.
“Changsha’s exports of mechanical and electrical products registered robust growth, and the number of China-Europe freight trains operated in Changsha reached a record high. They are the main reasons for Changsha’s foreign trade growth last year,” said a person in charge of the Xingsha Customs. Last year, Changsha’s exports of mechanical and electrical products to the United States, Germany, the UK and Brazil hit 15.13 billion yuan, 2.52 billion yuan, 2.34 billion yuan and 1.49 billion yuan, respectively. Meanwhile, there were 1,030 inbound and outbound China-Europe freight trains operated in Changsha, an increase of 95.1%. The number of inbound and outbound twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) surged 87.4% to 86,964.
