The Hunan Culture Heritage Administration held a cultural heritage protection and utilization reform working conference in Changsha on November 12, 2021. The conference focused on implementing President Xi Jinping’s instructions and the related documents of the Central Government on cultural heritage protection and archaeological work. Related studies and work were planned. The conference stressed taking the opportunity of cultural heritage protection and utilization reform to open up new horizons for Hunan’s high-quality development of cultural heritage undertakings.
The central authority issued a notification on strengthening cultural heritage protection and archaeological work this September. The notification listed Hunan as one of the 10 major provinces/municipalities in cultural heritage, and called for reinforcing the archaeological and cultural heritage protection institutions in these ten provinces. There are 20,366 registered immovable cultural heritages around Hunan, including 228 registered key sites under national-level protection which ranks 8th nationwide; and, 161 museums and memorial halls. Hunan’s archaeological discoveries had been included in China’s top 10 new archaeological discoveries for 12 times; and, 4 projects shortlisted for China’s 100 major centenary archaeological discoveries, in the front rank of the country.
Yu Xinrong, deputy director of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee Publicity Department and director of the Hunan Department of Culture and Tourism, called for taking opportunities, and cultivating a group of management institutions and professional personnel that qualified in cultural heritage resources related work and responsibilities. More efforts should be made to enhance archaeological work, including carrying out ten themed archaeological projects such as research on field archaeology theories and methods, and boosting the research project for the civilization progress in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Cultural heritage protection should be strengthened through accelerating construction of cultural heritage and revolutionary relics data bases; modifying Hunan provincial regulations on cultural heritage protection; and, constructing provincial-level engineering and technological research centers and key laboratories for cultural heritage protection and utilization. Works should be done to accelerate building the Hunan Museum into a world-class museum; facilitate all-media presentation and communication of archaeological and historical research outcomes, and present cultural landmarks and spirit hallmarks with cultural heritages; and, integrate cultural heritages and museums with education, tourism, and internet technology, to bring back to life cultural heritages.
