The result of the 2021-2023 “Chinese Folk Culture and Art Town” was released, according to the Hunan Department of Culture and Tourism on November 8. A total of 183 counties/county-level cities/ districts, and townships/sub-districts made the list. Hunan has 9 places being shortlisted, ranking 4th nationwide.
The “Chinese Folk Culture and Art Town” is a public-interest cultural program initiated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, being held triennially. Based on the requirements of the new era, this year’s evaluation focused on the candidates’ roles in inheriting outstanding traditional Chinese culture; promoting advanced socialist culture; boosting high-quality development of public cultural service; facilitating integration of culture and tourism; and, assisting in rural revitalization. The representative folk culture and art include traditional artistic forms, such as fine art, calligraphy, music, dance, and opera; and, emerging forms such as photography, chorus, and farmers’ paintings.
Hunan’s nine shortlisted places and their featured cultural and artistic forms are:
- Huxingshan Yao Township, Longhui County, Shaoyang – Huayao Embroidery;
- Qiyang County-level City, Yongzhou – Qi Opera;
- Wudaoshui Town, Sangzhi County, Zhangjiajie – Sangzhi Folk Song;
- Zixing County-level City, Chenzhou – photography;
- Pingtan Township, Tongdao Dong Autonomous County, Huaihua – Lusheng of Dong ethnic group;
- Changning County-level City, Hengyang – Print Making;
- Jiuxi Town, Taoyuan County, Changde – Plank Dragon Dance;
- Huayuan County, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous County – Miao Embroidery and Brocade; and,
- Baiyangtian Town, Linxiang County-level City, Yueyang – Lion Dance.
These folk culture and arts are widely known, with brand activities, representative teams and figures, and public participation. They would help promote rural revitalization, integration of culture and tourism, and innovative development of cultural industry.
