The Yuelu Seed Industry Summit is held in Changsha between October 8 and 10, 2021. Experts and enterprise representatives get together to exchange views on revitalization of seed industry, and boost further development of this sector in Changsha.
Changsha, reputed as the “Seed Industry Valley of China”, leads the whole country in research and innovation in rice, canola, pig, tea, and pepper sectors. There are one national technological innovation center, three national key laboratories, three national engineering technological research center, and nine national seed breeding centers. The fruitful research outcomes have filled up the gaps in crop hybridization theories, and mark that core technologies of rice breeding had been acquired. The first “double low” genotype of canola in China was bred here. Breakthroughs have been made in a number of key and core technologies, such as biological feed security and pollution control; artificial hybridization and large-scale production of hybrid seeds of pepper; and, interspecific reproductive isolation of fish.
The Longping Hi-tech Industrial Park, which was named after academician Yuan Longping, has an elite team of 5 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), 7 candidates of national talent projects, and more than 3,900 researchers. There are 25 higher educational and research institutions, including the Institute of Subtropical Agriculture of CAS, Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Hunan Agricultural University, and Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center. It is a region with the most biological breeding research institutes across China, even worldwide. And it is the location of the most biological breeding enterprises in China. There are more than 200 related businesses on the biological breeding industrial chain, including the Yuan Longping High-tech Agriculture Co., Ltd. and Huazhi Biotech Co., Ltd.
The Yuelu Mountain Seed Industry Innovation Center was founded in May 2020. It is committed to becoming a “national powerhouse of science and technology” in biological seed sector, and providing a Changsha mode in tackling problems in core technological research that hinder the country's germplasm resources , and boosting seed industrial and technological system reform.
Hunan is leveraging its various advantages and resources, in line with national seed industry laboratories, to join hands with the CITIC Group and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences to construct the Yuelu Laboratory. It will focus on making breakthroughs in basic theoretical research, core and key technology innovation, and new species cultivation, which will contribute to the vitalization of seed industry.
