On August 25, the 2021 National Low-carbon Day Hunan Online and Offline Events kicked off. At the opening ceremony, Chen Wenhao, vice governor of Hunan Province, called for everyone to lead a low-carbon lifestyle, so as to speed up green transition in the province.
In recent years, Hunan has attached great importance to reducing pollution and carbon emissions. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, the province has actively implemented green and low-carbon development. Hunan’s annual GDP growth rate is 7% while its average annual growth of energy consumption is 2.3%. Hunan’s energy consumption per unit of GDP declined 20.1%. The target of controlling both the total amount and intensity of energy consumption has been achieved.
The Hunan event is themed on “Low-carbon Lifestyle and Green Future”. Green and low-carbon production and life experiences and typical cases were shared on site. A proposal to address climate change was put forward. Online quizzes on low-carbon and energy-saving knowledge were launched across the province.
Chen Wenhao stated that departments at all levels must earnestly implement President Xi Jinping’s important instructions on peak carbon emission and carbon neutrality. Chen added that we should strengthen top-level design, accelerate the transformation and upgrading of industrial structure, speed up the construction of a clean and low-carbon energy system, promote green transition in transportation, and coordinate efforts to achieve carbon peak and neutrality goals. The event aims to promote a green and low-carbon lifestyle and create a good atmosphere for energy saving and carbon emission reduction. This will lead to form a governance model based on collaboration and common interests, with governments playing a leading role, enterprises shouldering responsibilities of reducing pollution and carbon emissions, and the public leading a green lifestyle.
