A ceremony was held in Changsha on July 23 to mark the delivery of the first batch of 28 new energy vehicles to aid the construction of Vientiane Saysettha Low-Carbon Demonstration Zone, a South-South cooperation program on climate change between China and Laos. These vehicles will be used to help the demonstration zone achieve low-carbon transportation. This will facilitate China and Laos to jointly promote the construction of the demonstration zone, and set a good example for South-South cooperation on climate change.

In recent years, based on the traditional friendly and cooperative relations, China and Laos have been continuously deepening experience exchange and cooperation in addressing climate change and protecting the environment. The Ministry of Ecology and Environment is leading the effort to donate new energy vehicles, solar LED street lights and environmental monitoring equipment to the Saysettha Low-Carbon Demonstration Zone. The first batch of supplies were dispatched in June.

The new energy vehicles donated this time were produced by Changsha BYD Electronics Co., Ltd. They include: 12 C8 pure electric buses and 8 T5D pure electric trucks, which will become the demonstration zone’s first batch of pure electric commercial vehicles, and 8 Yuan electric vehicles (EVs) featuring low energy consumption and extraordinary performance experience. These new energy vehicles are expected to help reduce local carbon emissions by about 1,243 tons per year. The effect is equivalent to that of planting more than 100,000 trees.

In recent years, Changsha has actively responded to climate change. It strengthened coordinated efforts to prevent and control air pollution and tackle climate change; promoted low-carbon projects such as the use of new energy and renewable resources and low-carbon transportation; increased exchanges and cooperation in the aspects of low-carbon city development strategies, systems and mechanisms, and low-carbon technologies; and, made solid progress in green and low-carbon development. Changsha will firmly pursue green, low-carbon, circular and sustainable development path, and deepen cooperation and make progress together with Laos in ecological environment, industry, economy and trade, culture and tourism.
