China’s first double-decker bullet train exported to Europe rolled off the production line at CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co., Ltd. (CRRC ZELC) on May 31, 2021. The train was independently developed by China and meets EU railway interconnection technical specifications. It has a maximum operating speed of 200 kilometers per hour and will run on the railways of five countries including Austria, Germany, and Hungary.

The train is composed of 6 carriages, with a seat capacity of 571. It can accommodate 1,280 passengers, an increase of 30% to 35% compared with single-deck EMUs. It has such characteristics as large passenger capacity; flexible marshalling; safety; reliability; intelligence; and, comfort. It adopts the integrated design of dual-flow AC drive system, with both automatic and manual switching, which enables rapid switching of different power supply systems and different functional requirements. Meanwhile, it is equipped with multiple signal systems to meet the transportation needs of European railway interconnection.

Since signing the contract with an Austrian company in December 2019, CRRC ZELC has organized a project team to complete the new train production in just 18 months during the COVID-19 epidemic. The project length has been shortened by half compared to similar international products.
