Changsha’s Population Exceeds 10 Million for First Time

The Hunan Provincial People's Government Information Office held a press conference at the Hunan Today building on May 19. It announced the results of the 7th national population census conducted last year. Changsha's population exceeded 10 million for the first time, showing the population agglomeration effect.

Among Hunan’s 13 cities and 1 prefecture, Changsha, Hengyang, Shaoyang, Yongzhou and Changde are the top five cities in terms of permanent resident population.

Changsha’s permanent resident population increased by 3.007 million or 4.41 percentage points from the previous census conducted in 2010 to 10.0479 million, ranking the first in the province and accounting for 15.12% of the province’s total.


The population of Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan city cluster area was 16.6768 million, accounting for 25.10% of the province’s total; that of southern Hunan was 16.6022 million, accounting for 24.99%; that of western Hunan was 18.9832 million, accounting for 28.57%; and, that of Dongting Lake area was 14.1826 million, accounting for 21.34%.
