On April 20, Mao Weiming, CPC Hunan Provincial Committee deputy secretary and Hunan governor, paid field visits to river mouths where Xiangjiang, Zijiang, Yuanjiang, and Lishui join the Dongting Lake in Yueyang, Yiyang, and Changde. Secretary Mao made the inspection tour on the protection and improvement of Yangtze River, Dongting Lake, as well as Xiangjiang, Zijiang, Yuanjiang, and Lishui Rivers, and flood prevention to ensure public security. Mao has inspected the “four Yangtze River tributaries” comprehensive improvement project and the Yangtze Riverbank Hunan section in early April.

Mao stressed that we must implement President Xi Jinping’s instructions on ecological civilization to protect the Yangtze River, and take practical measures to promote flood control and drought relief work.

Wang Qun, Hunan Provincial People’s Government secretary general, accompanied Mao on the tour.

Mao Weiming pointed out that we must take serious measures to rectify prominent problems in ecological environment and focus on the rectification of the environmental problems assigned by the central government. Practical measures should be made to protect drinking water sources, clean up black and malodorous water bodies, resolve other longstanding problems, and pursue environmental safety. The province should adopt a holistic approach to preserve mountains, rivers, forests, farmland, lakes, and grasslands to protect Yangtze River, Dongting Lake, as well as Xiangjiang, Zijiang, Yuanjiang, and Lishui Rivers, with Dongting Lake and Xiangjiang River as the main battle fields. This will help meet diversified demands for flood prevention, water supply, irrigation, ecology, and sightseeing. Efforts should be made to coordinate the prevention at the source, process control and management, and treatment at the end, so as to better ensure the implementation of the Three Highlands and Four New Missions Strategy.
