The People’s Government of Xishan District, Wuxi City, reached a cooperation agreement with Hunan University (HNU) on April 12, 2021. The two parties agreed to jointly establish a HNU-Wuxi Semiconductor Advanced Manufacturing Research Institute.

A domestically leading research team, composed of academicians, professional researchers, senior engineers, and graduate students, will be formed to promote semiconductor manufacturing industry upgrading. A membership of 200 will be expected within three years.

Wuxi, a southern base of China’s microelectronics industry, has a solid foundation in semiconductor industry. Xishan District is a highland of Wuxi’s integrate circuit industry. It has more than 30 electronic information and integrate circuit enterprises, and complete industrial chains.

HNU is a key university affiliated with the Ministry of Education. It has been included in China’s “Project 211” and “Project 985” for priority investment and construction, and the national project of building world-class universities. It has prominent advantages in semiconductor advanced manufacturing field.

The new institute will focus on core applied technology of semiconductor advanced manufacturing, and six professional aspects – semiconductor wafer laser manufacturing; semiconductor wafer ultra-precision manufacturing; semiconductor optic components and parts micro and nano-fabrication; semiconductor testing; ultra-precision functional component manufacturing; power semiconductor device and application. HNU will collaborate with Wuxi local government in research and development, technological innovation, public service, talent cultivation, and research outcome transformation, to build the institute into a globally influential one, and drive the forming of a 10-billion-CNY semiconductor advanced manufacturing industrial cluster, said Liu Jian, vice dean of HNU College of Mechanical and Vehicle Engineering.

The institute construction will be led by Ding Rongjun, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and also dean of HNU College of Mechanical and Vehicle Engineering, and undertaken by the National Xishan Economic and Technological Development Zone. It will leverage HNU’s advantages of research personnel and the platform of the state engineering and technological center for semiconductor advanced manufacturing. Upon operation, it will be a supplement to Xishan’s integrate circuit industrial chain in the aspects of semiconductor equipment manufacturing, core component research and production, and precision processing of raw materials.
