The Hunan Provincial Department of Commerce reports that the Hunan economy had adequate supplies, a rich variety of goods, and stable prices for necessities during the holiday. The commodity market was operating smoothly. Revenues for 159 key retail companies increased by 35% and operating income of 38 key catering companies increased by 101% respectively over last year’s  Spring Festival.

During the Spring Festival holiday, many people travelled and went shopping thanks to the fine weather. Visitors were immersed in the festive atmosphere. Major business districts were busier than prior Spring Festivals. Many shopping malls and supermarkets extended business hours. Residents posed with red and cute ox-shaped decorations at the entrance of Changsha’s Fuxing China Finance Center (CFC) on Furong Road. Themed activities echoed the “stay put” policy in Changsha’s Spring Shopping Mall, Wangfujing Shopping Mall, and RT-MART.

During the Spring Festival, merchandise sales grew rapidly, with sales of clothing, shoes, hats, gold and silver jewelry, and communication equipment increased significantly. Over last year, clothing sales increased 182%, shoes and hat sales increased 130%, gold, silver and jewelry increased 372%, and communication equipment increased 119%.

Catering and accommodations are recovering from last year. Hotel and catering sales increased significantly and large hotel business has recovered. Family reunion dinners, family and friend gatherings, and leisure at farmhouses are now the highlights of the Spring Festival catering market. The combined business of Changsha municipal-monitored catering companies, such as Mingcheng International Hotel, Liuyanghe Group, and the Qinhuang Restaurant, reached almost 5 million yuan, an increase of more than 90% over 2020.
