Hunan Steps up Efforts for Yangtze River Fishing Ban

On January 18, the launching ceremony of the special action “Three Commitments and One Initiative” of the “10 Years Fishing Ban” on the Yangtze River in Hunan Province was held on the Orange Isle, Changsha City. Hunan Vice Governor He Baoxiang attended and addressed its opening.

Starting 0:00 on January 1, 2021, the Hunan section of the Yangtze River, the Dongting Lake, and the mainstream watershed of the four rivers of Xiangjiang, Zijiang, Yuanshui, and Lishui have been taken the initiative of “10 Years Fishing Ban”. Hunan has arranged a one-year special action for the Yangtze River “10 Years Fishing Ban” and “Three Commitments and One Initiative”, to achieve the goal of “no markets to sell, no restaurants to cook, and no one to eat” the wild fish in the Yangtze River basin.

At the ceremony, representatives of relevant food business entities publicly pledged to strictly implement the main responsibility of food safety and not to purchase or sell illegally-caught fish from the prohibited waters of the Yangtze River basin. Representatives of relevant catering business units promised to strictly practise the mechanism of requesting certificates for purchases and resolutely prevent illegal fishing in the Yangtze River basin from entering catering operations. Relevant e-commerce platform operators agreed to strictly implement the obligations of entry inspection, file registration, regular verification and updating, and not to provide platform services for business activities such as the sale of wild fish and their products or illegal fishing gear in the Yangtze River.

The Hunan Consumer Council proposed that consumers consciously boycott any gatherings that involve the consumption of wild fish from the Yangtze River; not buy or accept gifts of wild fish from the Yangtze River; and, not condone or protect relatives and friends from participating in illegal fishing activities or buying or eating fresh wild fish from the Yangtze River. It called the public for striving to be a “Fishing Ban” publicity agent and supervisor.
