Hunan Sports Team Achieves Best-ever Results After Sydney 2000 Olympics

Luo Shifang, a girl from Guiyang County, Chenzhou City, Hunan Province, secured the women's 59kg weightlifting gold medal with a winning total of 241kg at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on the afternoon of August 8 local time. So far, Hunan athletes in the Paris Olympics have won 4 gold, 5 silver, and 2 bronze medals, which surpassed the past five sessions, boasting the best record after the Sydney 2000 Olympics.


At the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, eight Hunan athletes won 7 gold, 1 silver, and 5 bronze, accounting for one quarter of the gold medals taken by the Chinese sports delegation. Since then, "Hunan sports force" has earned its fame at home and abroad.


Four years later at the Athens 2004 Olympics, Hunan athletes experienced a trough with zero gold medal.

At the Beijing 2008 Olympics, 12 Hunan athletes including Li Xiaopeng and Long Qingquan, clinched 3 gold medals, helping the Hunan sports force getting out of the doldrum.

At the London 2012 Olympics, 11 Hunan athletes harvested 2 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze.

At the Rio 2016 Olympics, 14 Hunan athletes won 2 gold, 3 silver, and 3 bronze.

At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics three years ago, 16 Hunan athletes earned 2 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze.

There are 15 Hunan athletes competing in this year's Olympic Games. As of the afternoon of August 8 local time, they have won 4 gold, 5 silver, and 2 bronze, respectively:

- Jia Yifan's gold medal in the badminton women's doubles event;

- Zhang Yayi's gold medal in the artistic swimming team event;

- Hou Zhihui's gold medal in the women's 49kg weightlifting event;

- Luo Shifang's gold medal in the women's 59 kg weightlifting event;

- Zhang Boheng's 2 silver and 1 bronze in the men's artistic gymnastics events;

- Zhou Yaqin's silver medal in the artistic gymnastics women's balance beam event;

- Deng Lijuan and Wu Peng respectively won sport climbing women's and men's speed silver in the event's Olympic debut; and,

- Yan Langyu won a bronze medal in the men's trampoline.
