Hunan recorded a total import and export volume of 4.61 billion CNY with the European Union (EU) this June, a year-on-year increase of 28.3%. Exports rose 30.6% to 3.38 billion CNY while imports grew 22.5% to 1.23 billion CNY. In June, Hunan's trade with Germany surged 35.1% to 1.26 billion CNY, boasting the largest growth rate among all EU member states and directly driving the counter-trend growth of Hunan's trade with the EU, the Changsha Customs Authority said on July 28, 2025.
"Germany is Hunan's largest economic and trade partner in the EU," said a spokesperson of the Changsha Customs Authority. Since the beginning of this year, exchanges between Hunan and Germany have become increasingly frequent. There is enormous potential for cooperation between the two sides in such areas as next-generation automotive parts, intelligent manufacturing, and green supply chains. In April, nearly 10 German companies brought their products or technologies to the Xiangjiang New Area in Hunan, with two German SME headquarters projects and two Hunan-Germany cooperation projects signed and implemented.
In the first half of this year (H1), Hunan's trade with the EU amounted to 22.67 billion CNY, with exports and imports totaling 15.65 billion CNY and 7.02 billion CNY, respectively. Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, and Spain were top four trading partners of Hunan Province. Among them, the province's trade with Germany climbed 18.3% to 8.37 billion CNY.
Private enterprises took the lead in trade with the EU, importing and exporting 17.47 billion CNY of products to the EU in H1. The figure represented 77% of the total value of imports and exports between Hunan and the EU during the same period. Exports were primarily mechanical and electrical products, up 1.7%, while automatic data processing equipment and its components, electric vehicles, and computer and communications technology continued to grow rapidly. Among the imports, the total value of mechanical and electrical products and agricultural products accounted for half of Hunan's total imports from the EU during the same period. Pulp, electronic technology, and pharmaceutical materials and medicines saw strong growth.
