Changsha Ranks 15th Among China's Top 100 Cities in Terms of GDP

Chinese financial media outlet China Business Network (CBN) recently released a list of China's top 100 cities in terms of GDP in 2022. Twenty-four cities had a GDP of more than 1 trillion yuan. Five cities from Hunan made the top 100 GDP list, namely Changsha, Yueyang, Changde, Hengyang and Zhuzhou. Among them, Changsha's GDP ranked 15th nationwide, enjoying the fastest growth rate of 4.5% among cities in the "one-trillion-yuan club".

According to data released by local statistics bureaus and public reports, the total economic aggregate of the top 100 Chinese cities with the largest GDPs in 2022 reached 85.1 trillion yuan, accounting for 70.3% of the country's total. Among the top 100 cities listed by GDP in 2022, 56 had a GDP of more than 500 billion yuan, three more than the previous year.

The Top 10 Chinese city economies with the largest GDP in 2022 were Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Suzhou, Chengdu, Wuhan, Hangzhou, and Nanjing. As a representative of the new first-tier cities, Changsha ranked among the top 15 cities in China together with Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.

Changsha's GDP reached nearly 1.4 trillion yuan in 2022, an increase of 4.5% over the previous year. The added value of the primary industry grew 3.6% to 45.13 billion yuan; that of the secondary industry was 558.958 billion yuan, up 6.2%; and, that of the tertiary industry rose 3.4% to 792.524 billion yuan. Changsha's GDP ranked first among all cities and prefecture in Hunan. Changsha is also the only city in Hunan with a GDP of over one trillion yuan. Changsha enjoyed a relatively high level of primacy in economic contribution, with its GDP accounting for about 28.7% of the province's total.
