On October 21, a press conference in the series on Hunan's achievements during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, with a special session by Yueyang City was held in Changsha. From 2020 to 2024, Yueyang's GDP increased from 399.716 billion CNY to 512.766 billion CNY, successively surpassing the thresholds of 400 billion CNY and 500 billion CNY, with an average annual growth rate of 5.8%. The per capita GDP rose from 79,000 CNY to 103,000 CNY, with an average annual growth rate of 6.2%. Yueyang has been listed among the "Top 100 Chinese Cities" for many consecutive years.
Over the past five years, Yueyang has accelerated the construction of the "1+3+X" modern industrial system, which involves transforming and upgrading the traditional petrochemical industry; consolidating and extending three advantageous industries of port logistics, modern agriculture and green food processing, and cultural and sports tourism; cultivating and strengthening emerging industries such as advanced equipment manufacturing, circular economy, and medical health, while making forward-looking arrangements for future industries like bio-manufacturing and hydrogen energy. Major projects of ethylene, caprolactam, Panhua Group, Inovance Technology, and Tsinghua Unigroup have been implemented, leading to the formation of five 100-billion-CNY level industries. They are modern chemical, port logistics, modern agriculture and green food processing, cultural and sports tourism, and advanced equipment manufacturing.
Yueyang has established an open platform system of "Three Zones, One Port, and Five Designated Supervision Sites." The city successfully hosted the China-Africa Power and New Energy Development Cooperation, Exchange and Matchmaking Conference. It ranks first in Hunan Province for port berths of 1,000-tonne class and above. The first phase of Yugong Port started operation. The Chenglingji-Vladivostok direct shipping route and the Yueyang-Huaihua-ASEAN international rail-sea intermodal transport of the New Western Land-Sea Trade Corridor operate efficiently, making Chenglingji the third million-TEU port on the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Yueyang has been listed among the "Top 100 Chinese Cities for Foreign Trade" for many consecutive years.
Yueyang has continuously carried out the "Summer Campaign" for pollution prevention and control, achieving a 100% rate of good water quality in the Yueyang section of the Yangtze River. Total phosphorus concentrations in the Yueyang area of Dongting Lake meet assessment requirements more stringent than national and provincial standards. The urban air quality reaches national Grade II standards. Yueyang has been recognized as an International Wetland City and approved as one of the first national pilot sponge cities.
In Yueyang, the proportion of fiscal investment in livelihood sectors to general public budget expenditure has remained stable above 70%. The per capita disposable income of residents increased from 28,577 CNY in 2020 to 36,836 CNY in 2024, with an average annual growth rate of 6.6%. A cumulative total of 326,000 new urban jobs has been created. The pressing concerns of the public, such as difficulties in accessing education, medical care, employment, and transportation, have been effectively addressed.
