Changsha Metro Line 2- A Complete Guide

Phase I of Changsha Metro Line 2 serves as the core line of east-west rail transit in Changsha, the east-west transportation corridor with the largest predicated passengers and the busiest buses of the city. It runs through 3 east-west passenger hubs of Changsha (West Station of Changsha, Changsha Railway Station and Changsha South Railway Station) and 4 passenger flow collector-distributor centers (Yingwanzhen, Wuyi Square, Furong Square and Yuanjialing). The underground line stretches almost 22.262 kilometers, consisting of 19 stations, with 6 transfer stations. A total investment of 11.9 billion yuan has been injected in the project. It started its construction on September 28th, 2009 and began its trial run on December 30th, 2013, becoming the first metro line to open to the traffic in Changsha.

Line 2: Jinqiao Transportation Hub – Guangda
Full Length: 42.1 kilometers (about 26.2 miles)
The 22.3-kilometer-long (about 13.8 miles) phase 1 came into use in October, 2013 with 19 stations, which, from west to east, are Wangchengpo, Jinxing Ave, Xihu Park, Yingwanzhen, Orange Isle, Xiangjiang Mid Road, Wuyi Square, Furong Square, Yingbin Road, Yuanjialing, Changsha Railway Station, Jintai Square, Wanjiali Square, Renmin East Road, Changsha Avenue, Sports Park, Duhua Road, Changsha South Railway Station and Guangda. The western extension, from Wangchengpo to Jinqiao Transportation Hub, is scheduled to be 20 kilometers (about 12 miles) long. The first phase of this section, measuring 4 kilometers long, with 4 stops, will open before 2018.

Ticketing Rules

Changsha metro adopts a mileage fragmentation valuation system, with the starting fare being priced at 2 yuan for a 6-kilometer ride. For distances over 6 kilometers, a mileage cost that progressively increases in units of 1 yuan is added to the starting price. For distances between 6-16 kilometers, 1 yuan is added per 5 kilometers. For distances between 16-30 kilometers, 1 yuan is increased per 7 kilometers. For distances over 30 kilometers, 1 yuan is added per 9 kilometers.

Ticket/ Card/ Pass


Changsha metro adopts the "one passenger one ticket" policy. The metro card types include single-ride ticket, pre-paid metro card, student metro card, and senior citizen metro card.

Single-ride ticket

Single-ride tickets can be purchased from ticket vending machines or at the ticket window. These tickets are embedded with RFID contactless chips. When entering the system you tap the ticket against a scanner above the turnstile, and on exit you insert the ticket into a slot where it is stored and recycled.

Student metro card

The student card integrates education, symbolized by letters, numbers, and operative symbols. With green as its main color, the card represents spring, campus, youth, and land that gives birth to life.

Senior citizen metro card

The subway ticket card for the aged at highlights a peony, indicating good wishes for fortune and health to the elderly. The card, in yellow, implies happiness, sunshine, autumn and harvest.

The card can be bought at the customer service center at the stations of rail transit in Changsha City for a price of 100 yuan (including 17 yuan deposit and 83 yuan for riding).

The card can be recharged on ticket vending machine and at customer service center at the stations of rail transit in Changsha City. The amount of recharge should be integral multiples of 50 yuan, with the total value in the card less than 500 yuan.

Special services

Two self-service libraries have been placed into operation at the Furong Square and Wuyi Square stations of Changsha Subway Line 2. Constituted by book showcases and machines like ATM (Automatic Teller Machine), these libraries can accommodate 402 books. Books could be borrowed and returned in over 80 main and sub-branch libraries of Changsha.


Boasting its convenience of borrowing books in 30 seconds while returning in 10, the self-service libraries are in accord with the fast–paced life of subway users. Managed by specially assigned persons from the Changsha Municipal Library, the subway libraries will be thoroughly updated once half a month to ensure at least 280 books in the libraries. Besides, management personnel has been trained to tackle technical problems in less than an hour in case of machine malfunction.

Preferential policies

Preferential policies covers soldiers, the disabled, the elderly, currently enrolled students of common elementary and middle schools, senior high schools, vocational high school and technical secondary schools students in Changsha and children not exceeding 1.3 meters in height.
